Onze Kolyma Honden - Our Kolyma Dogs : Ons E-Nest - Our E-Litter

Voor ons gevoel moest deze combinatie ons gaan geven waar we in onze fokkerij op uit waren. Liberty (dam) was inmiddels één van onze drie beste honden in het team en zelf het product van goede lijnteelt uit Vainina, onze beste Astro dochter en beste leaddog van dat moment. Met Spook (sire), genetisch half Seppala met als Sire Bilkoff (de nestbroer van Nicolai II) moest ons geven waar we op uit waren in onze fokkerij in conformatie en drive maar vooral ook de extra vitaliteit die Spook in zou gaan brengen vanwege de outcross die hij zelf was.

We hielden alle pups aan totdat ze in het harnas ingebroken waren en lieten 3 ervan pas na ruim een jaar – met een wedstrijdseizoen in ons B team – gaan naar goede teams. Emily en Emmitt waren de twee beste honden uit het nest die op hun 2e jaar in harnas vol meegingen in ons team en het later zowel in de teams als in de fokkerij van Inger Hedegaard (Emily) en Axel Vermehren (Emmitt) heel erg goed gedaan hebben.

Liberty was een typisch “werkende moeder” die een ijzig strenge opvoeding in haar kinderen stopte. We gaven het nest daarom een hele grote kennel en een heel groot nachthok om de pups de ruimte te geven af en toe aan hun strenge moeder te kunnen ontkomen. We hielden vaak ons hart vast. Maar toen we de pups in het harnas zetten... boem... als pro’s gingen ze weg. Geen omkijken naar en de discipline die ze toonden in hun verdere sleehondenbestaan was formidabel.

We were convinced that this combination would give us what we were after in our breeding program. Liberty (the dam) had developed into one of the three best dogs in our team and was herself the outcome of good line breeding out of Vainina, our Astro daughter and the best lead-dog of our team. Spook (the sire) was genetically half-Seppala from his dam, and Bilkoff (his sire) was Nicolai II’s litter-mate, and this gave us the conformation and drive we desired, but above all Spook’s extra vitality, thanks to being an outcross himself, was also passed on in so many of his litters.

We kept all the pups until they were broken in harness and only let three go to good sled-dog teams, after they were a year old and had a racing season behind them in our B team. Emily and Emmitt were the best of the litter and became important dogs of our first team the next year.  Both proved to be very good racing and breeding dogs in the teams of Inger Hedergaard (Emily) and Axel Vermehren (Emmit).

Liberty was a typical “working mother” who gave her pups a very severe education. Luckily we had a very large pen and doghouse, which gave the pups an escape when Libby decided to correct them. Gosh, every now and then we hardly dared to look, but Libby cared very well for them and all were very healthy and happy little guys. When we put them in harness the first time... boom... off they went, absolute pros. Their discipline in harness as sled-dogs was unequalled.
