Onze Kolyma Honden - Our Kolyma Dogs : Ons Z2-Nest - Our Z2-Litter

The last Kolyma litter. At the time we did not know that a year later we would close the Kolyma Kennel and end our breeding program. We were physically and mentally unable to continue. We repeated the Liberty of Koyma and Alaskan’s Spook of Anadyr combination, as their E-litter produced two of our best dogs, Emily of Kolyma and Emmitt of Kolyma. Amazingly we had some shyness with these pups, not the shyness from lack of handling, but the shyness genetically anchored in the breed. Zanushka was sound in temperament but a little smaller than the other pups, so we let her go at three months old, but the others we kept, as usual, until they were broken in harness. The whole litter was in conformation, movement, drive and appearance were all spectacularly uniform, all we had been striving for, for all of those years in our breeding program. The sad aspect was that this was happening in the final litter we would breed.

When we informed Earl and Natalie Norris about our decision their comment was

“Now one of the most important gene pools within our breed will be lost.” We were grateful for this compliment, of course, but at the same time it still makes me very sad.

Credit for the quality of our Kolyma dogs and their offspring, and our achievements in the Central European sled-dog race trails, goes to Earl and Natalie Norris, owners of the Alaskan Kennels and the Anadyr dogs they were willing to let go to us. I am still grateful for how it genetically started to come together in our breeding program, and thankful that our dogs went to the top breeders elsewhere in Europe and contributed to the continuation of  the Anadyr/Kolyma working Siberian Husky.

The hole in my soul never completely healed.
