De Export Honden naar Europa - Exports to Europe
De Siberian Husky Luchtbrug...
Hier zal je vele honden vinden die Lew en ik naar Europa importeerden voor onszelf zowel als voor onze sleehondenvrienden in Nederland en Centraal Europa (ongeveer 80 in totaal in die jaren).
Ik ging minstens één maal per jaar naar Willow, maar vaak genoeg twee keer. Als verkeersvlieger en “vrouw van” was het relatief makkelijk - en zonder kosten! - om de honden aan boord te krijgen. Alles wat nodig was, was de benodigde vaccinaties. De officiële AKC registratie en stamboom nam wat meer tijd. Voor Engeland (zes maanden) een de Scandinavië (vier maanden) moesten de honden in die tijd in quarantaine. Dat was een behoorlijke additionele kostenfactor en vaak een lange eenzame periode voor de honden zelf. Inmiddels bestaan er gelukkig geen quarantaine restricties in Europa meer.
Ik herinner me niet alle honden meer die Lew en ik naar Europa brachten. Ik zal proberen zo compleet mogelijk te zijn. Verwacht ze ook niet in chronologische volgorde. Mijn “files” zijn niet meer dan een aantal plastic dozen onder mijn bed. Wat ik daar vind als ik erin rondrommel, zo krijg je ze op deze bladzijde te zien!
Natuurlijk zijn er in de loop van die jaren ook vele Europese Mushers naar Willow gegaan om zelf Anadyrhonden te importeren. Welke dat allemaal zijn ? Ik weet het niet precies. Meer gedetailleerde informatie over de Anadyrhonden die wij voor ons eigen fokprogramma en voor ons team geïmporteerd hebben, vind je op mijn Kolyma bladzijden. The Siberian Husky Airlift...
Here you will find many of the dogs that Lew and I brought to Europe for our sled-dog friends (and ourselves) in The Netherlands and Central Europe (around 80 in total over the years).
I would visit Willow at least once a year, but often twice. As pilot and “the wife-of-a-pilot” it was relatively easy - and without cost! - to get the dogs on board an aircraft. All it took was to ensure that the dogs had the correct vaccinations, although official Alaskan Kennel Club pedigrees took a while longer to organise. For the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, at that time, quarantine periods were required (UK six months, Scandinavia four months), and that was quite a handicap as far as costs were concerned, and for the dogs as well - it would be a very lonely period for them. There are no quarantine restrictions in Europe anymore, thank goodness!
Obviously, I do not remember all the dogs Lew and I took with us. I will try to be as complete as possible but don't expect them in chronological sequence. My “files” are no more than big plastic boxes under my bed. What I find there when digging around in them, I will put on this page!
Besides us, in the following years, many European Mushers went to Willow themselves, to import Anadyr dogs - which ones? I don't quite know. CH. & Internationaal Ch. Alaskan’s Nicholas of Anadyr (sire & dam: Alaskan’s Nicolai II of Anadyr & Alaskan’s Chorni of Anadyr). De reu die ik voor Thomas Althaus heb weten los te krijgen - daar was behoorlijk wat diplomatie voor nodig. Je ziet hem hier nog aan zijn hok op de Farm en Thomas’ vrouw die hem CH en Internationaal Kampioen showde.
Swiss & International Ch. Alaskan’s Nicholas of Anadyr (sire & dam: Alaskan’s Nicolai II of Anadyr & Alaskan’s Chorni of Anadyr). This male dog I managed to obtain for Thomas Althaus - that took considerable diplomatic negotiations. You see him at his doghouse at the Farm and with Thomas’ wife, showing him as Swiss and International Champion.

Alaskan’s Mercury of Anadyr (Alaskan’s Bonzana of Anadyr x Alaskan’s Rene of Anadyr). I nam Mercury for Hans Eugen Reeh (Duitsland) mee. Mercury was een nestgenoot van onze Alaskan’s Mishonak of Anadyr (Whitey).
Alaskan’s Mercury of Anadyr (Alaskan’s Bonzana of Anadyr x Alaskan’s Rene of Anadyr). I picked Mercury for Hans Eugen Reeh (Germany). Mercury was a litter-mate of our Alaskan’s Mishonak of Anadyr (Whitey).
Alaskan’s Cosmo IV of Anadyr (Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr x Alaskan’s Yenka of Anadyr). Cosmo is door Ernst en Heidi Müller (Klondike Kennels) mee terug naar Zwitserland genomen na hun jaar op de Howling Dog Farm bij de Norrissen. Cosmo heeft een grote invloed gehad op het ras in Zwitserland en Ernst zijn winnende team op de Europese wedstrijdtrails.
Alaskan’s Cosmo IV of Anadyr (Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr x Alaskan’s Yenka of Anadyr). Cosmo was brought back to Switzerland by Ernst and Heidi Müller (Klondike Kennels) after their year at the Howling Dog Farm with the Norrises. Cosmo has had a considerable impact on the breed in Switzerland and Ernst ran him in his winning team in the European race-trails.
Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr
Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr (a ‘Pinto’ like his sire Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr) was an absolute first string dog from Earl Norris’ Rondy team (World Championship of Fur Rendezvous race). I considered him one of the perfect Siberian Huskies of our time, in conformation as well as drive and temperament. I made him Best of Group in a Swiss dogshow, despite the fact that Peter Thomann showed Pala on a dirty rope and totally covered in mud. My fellow judges did not take that with a smile, but Pala was the absolute best dog, muddy or not. Pala was widely used for breeding in Central Europe and we used him twice for breeding as well. He was almost always run as a lead-dog in Peter Thomann’s team, and also when Peter moved his whole kennel to Willow, Alaska.
Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr (een ‘Pinto’ zoals zijn vader Alaskan’s Astro of Anadyr) was een absolute 1e Team hond uit Earl Norris’ Rondy team (Wereldkampioenschappen of Fur Rendezvous race). Ik beschouwde hem een van de perfecte Siberian Huskies van onze tijd, in conformatie zowel als drive en temperament. Ik heb hem als keurmeester op een tentoonstelling in Zwitserland Best van de Groep gemaakt alhoewel Peter Thomann hem aan een vies touw en compleet onder de modder showde. Dat heb ik wel op mijn boterham gekregen van collegae keurmeesters maar het was absoluut de beste hond. Modder of geen modder. Pala is goed voor de fokkerij gebruikt in Centraal Europa en wij hebben hem 2 maal ingezet. Hij heeft bijna altijd als leidershond in Peter Thomann’s team gelopen, ook toen Peter zijn hele kennel naar Willow, Alaska verhuisde.

Alaskan’s Pala of Anadyr
I imported (DK) CH Alaskan’s Kaltag of Anadyr (Alaskan’s No-Ho of Anadyr x Duska of Seppala) for Grethe Westring (Chuckchi Kennel) because of his age (7 years) and his outcross background (his dam was Seppala McFaul), while his Sire was distant line bred as well. Thus Grethe would be able to provide him for breeding outside her kennel without restriction. Kaltag himself had a very nice stable temperament and was well balanced in build and within the breed standard. Grethe showed him to his DK Champions title and he helped her a lot in her small demonstration team to promote the Siberian Husky sled dog in Denmark.
Ik koos (DK) CH Alaskan’s Kaltag of Anadyr (Alaskan’s No-Ho of Anadyr x Duska of Seppala) uit voor Grethe Westring (Chuckchi Kennel) vanwege zijn leeftijd (7 jaar) en zijn outcross afstamming (moeder Seppala McFaul) terwijl hij aan zijn vaders kant ook verre lijnteelt was. Daarmee zou Grethe Westring hem ook buiten haar eigen kennel onbeperkt voor de fokkerij kunnen vrijgeven. Kaltag zelf had een heel vriendelijk temperament en was een goede evenredig gebouwde hond, goed binnen de ras standaard. Grethe showde hem naar zijn DK kampioenstitel en hij hielp haar kleine teampje goed bij haar demonstraties om de Siberian Husky als sleehond zijn bekendheid te geven.
